Designers of low voltage power circuits are often unaware of the implications of voltage drop and wire size. In conventional home electrical systems (120/240 volts ac), wire is sized primarily for safe amperage carrying capacity (ampacity). The overriding concern is fire safety. I plan to add two 30-amp circuits to my garage. One will be a 120V circuit and the other a 240V circuit. I purchased 100 ft. of 10/3 gauge wire for the 240V circuit. The minimum size service conduit shall be 1-1/4”. The minimum size service entrance wire shall be rated 100 amperes minimum for single family dwellings. For single family homes, the service disconnect means shall have a rating of less than 100 amperes, 3-wire.

In addition, circuit breaker ratings – e.g. 15A or 20A – are the maximum peak ratings for the circuits. For continuous duty, the suggested maximum is around 80% of the peak rating. That is why a standard water heater with 4800 watts on a 240 volt circuit, using 20 amps, requires a 30 amp circuit. Use an 18 gauge wire for current of 5 amperes or less. Use 12 gauge for currents that are between 5 amperes and 11.5 amperes. Use 6 gauge for up to 30 amperes, and 2 gauge wire for current up to 50 amperes. In this example, 12 gauge wire would be sufficient. For those looking for a more port able option, a garage heater that plugs into an outlet may be a more more suitable option. Mar 11, 2019 - Color code for residential wire/ how to match wire size and circuit breaker Have had a 4000 watt 220 volt heater in my 2 car garage for years, it's the bomb. Mine was "defective" as new, simply mis-wired at factory, thus free to me. Took about 5 minutes tracing the wires and checking the schematic. Amazing how many electricians can't read a schematic, the two other techs couldn't, when sent to fix it! I am planning on installing a Garage ceiling heater, which has a fan, and 240 volt coil electric heater. This unit is 26 amps, and 6000 watts, and will be installed in my garage, 60 feet from my main panel. Can you tell me what size wire, and breaker I need to feed this heater?Feb 17, 2008 · My understanding is this will energize both 120 volt legs of my house breaker panel. Here is my delimma: My generator's 240 output is a NEMA L14-30 receptable which is a 3-pole 4 wire receptacle. My 240 circuit in my garage was wired to operate a 240V electric heater and has a NEMA 6-30 receptacle, which is 2-pole 3 wire.

Mar 06, 2012 · There is a 30A breaker because the wire is 10gauge. 10 wire can hangle 30Amps. Over 30Amps can cause 10gauge wire to melt and become a fire hazard. If you want 40Amps in the garage, you need to replace the wire feeding the garage with 8 gauge wire. Replacing the feeder wire to the garage might be very difficult.

Oct 04, 2010 · As for the other questions, I've been looking at a Millermatic 211 dual-power 120/240-volt MIG welder. I already own a generator-powered welder mounted on a trailer but it's stored somewhere else and doesn't do MIG. I could also use 220/240 for a bigger air compressor and a mill. I'm going to hire a licensed electrician to do the work. 7500-Watt 240-Volt Hardwired Shop Garage Electric Heater Wall/Ceiling Mounted with Remote Controlled Thermostat Need safe, comfortable, quick heat. 2500w, 240v, 60", white, baseboard heater, 42% shorter than traditional baseboard, 40% faster heat flow, responds quickly to changes in temperature, keeps room temperature consistent, install thermostat on either end or hardwire your baseboard to a wall Technically, up to 5760W would be ok on a 30A 240V circuit on 10 gauge copper. Heaters are considered 'continuous loads' (full current draw for 3 hours or more), as is lighting and some other things, so the load is limited by the NEC to 80% of the circuit ampacity.
