There must be several reasons to not use 1x6's as very few decks are built with 1x6's The spacing allows the boards to easily and quickly shed water. Water that pools on decks will eventually cause the boards to rot. The spaces or gaps between the floor boards on the deck, also allows the deck boards to dry quicker as air can circulate around them. Set the depth just 1/16th inch more than the thickness of the deck boards. Your challenge will be to cut in the center of the groove. If you take your time, you should do fine. Cutting the boards will not affect the chemical composition at all. I'd venture to say the boards still have quite a bit of chemical treatment in them.
